As parents or teachers, you always want your children and students to succeed in life in whatever they are doing. You want them to study hard and achieve what others are achieving. And thus, you realize the importance of homework and you do your best to encourage them to finish their work on time and in an appropriate manner. You also want to and do render the required homework help and support so that they can finish the work. You even give them the mental support so that they don’t get tensed or too worked up about the homework and studies. It is good to provide help and assistance on a regular basis. But one thing you need to learn and respect is the independence of the students.
No matter how much they need help and how much you want to help, you also need to respect and honor their independence. The biggest mistake that a lot of parents tend to make is to do the homework for their kids. But you should never do that. Homework is a regular activity that the children need to do and if you do their homework, then it will become more of a regular work for you and this will get you tensed and worried. And more than you getting tensed and worried, the students won’t be able to extract any benefit out of the entire process. Homework is given to the children to make them learn their lessons and since you already know these lessons, you need to do the homework for them. Give them the independence of doing the same by themselves.
You also need to make them independent in another sense, where in you don’t guide them in every aspect of the work. Many a times, parents tend to set rules, define the time, space and everything else for a child to complete his homework. But you need to reduce on that also. Stop defining everything for the students and give them space to do things their way. Nobody likes to be told all the time and thus the same is the case with your children also. You need to give them the independence of doing things their way for better results.
Giving independence will make your kids much more responsible and smart. They will know that they have to finish certain tasks and will do their best to finish them. They will become much more concerned and conscious about their work. This doesn’t mean that you don’t ever support them or give them any kind of help. You render your assistance but only in situations when required and not always. This will help the students in learning responsibility and will also ensure more discipline in their homework.
